It was August of '72, and the river hadn't crested that high in living memory. My father — your great-grandfather — woke us at three in the morning. The barn was already ankle-deep. Grandma Ester was in her nightgown with the kerosene lantern, shouting for the dog. We drove the pickup up the hill road and watched the water climb the mailbox by six that morning. When it finally started dropping, the smell of silt was everywhere — thick, sweet, and awful.
